PLACES TO EAT IN AND AROUND SARLAT

There are many good restaurants and as many tourist traps in the town of Sarlat in particular. Here is a selection of restaurants that we have tried and enjoyed, where we advise you to call ahead and book a table. We are happy to make the booking for you if you'd like!

Our favourite affordable places to eat , some take-out options (€) :

💚 Chez Ninon, 4 place Marc Trefeil, Vitrac. Tel +33 (0)5 53 30 63 20. Next to the city hall on the main square, 10 minutes walk from Le Petit Manoir. Open daily 9am - 21h30 except Sunday. This café-wine bar-restaurant-food store opened in April 2023. It is a convenient concept for our guests, from the fresh bread sold in the morning to the flexible light lunch and dinner options (some vegetarian). Choice of salads and entrees to take out. Concert evening on Saturday with mandatory booking.

Le Pech de Malet in Montfort: booking is required to enjoy the view from the magnificent shaded terrace of this restaurant 2km from the Petit Manoir, which overlooks the cingle of Montfort. +33 5 53 28 14 82. Closed on Sunday evening. Daily lunch menu during the week for less than 20€. Home-made Périgord cuisine served like on the family table, friendly and efficient service, affordable prices. Popular with locals, this family restaurant is often full in summer. When the weather is bad, the indoor room is noisy.

Sawadee, Thai restaurant in Cénac, on the right as you enter the town just after the bridge over the Dordogne from the Petit Manoir. +33 5 53 28 20 51. Closed all day Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtimes. Thai cuisine based on fresh products, prepared by the Thai chef. Also sold to take away, call early to place your order. Suitable for vegetarians.

La Boca in Cénac, at the first roundabout as you enter the village. +33 5 5 53 30 03 74. Closed Sunday evening and all day Monday. Check evening opening, which varies according to the season. Tightly priced starter-main course-cheese buffet at lunchtime (€15), more elaborate buffet in the evening or on Sundays (<€30). The key word here is generosity 👍🏻 Homemade cuisine by the very dedicated owner. Unbeatable value for money, friendly service. Limited choice for vegetarians, here you'll find grilled meats, meat or fish sauces and charcuterie.

Chez Le Gaulois, place André Malraux in the old town of Sarlat, behind the Maison de La Boétie. +33 5 53 59 50 64. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Escape to the mountains at this Gaulois, originally from the Jura region, whose menu features melted cheese and charcuterie. Beautiful salads, friendly service, low prices and many regulars. It is advisable to make a reservation!

La Crèmerie, next to the main post office in Sarlat. +33 5 53 31 03 90. A cheese shop that offers delicious home-made lunchtime  entrees from Tuesday to Saturday, at unbeatable prices.  Take-out menu. Vegetarian offer.

Côté Pizza, 1 Av. Aristide Briand, Sarlat, +33 5 53 59 50 50. Take-out pizza, reliable service, affordable prices.

Les Pirates du Périgord, pizzas to take away or to eat on the spot in a picnic area, on the way out of the village of Carsac towards Sarlat on the D704. +33 6 64 76 87 16. Open from June to September only.
Young and old alike love the rural setting of this open-air pizzeria, unlike any other. The pizzas are good and the team friendly. Take-away pizzas can be ordered in advance.

💚 Le Trait d'Union, lieu-dit Le Port in Vézac, in a barn on the right before the bridge to Castelnaud. +33 5 47 27 43 37. A unique place in the Sarlat region: wine bar and cocktails with tapas trays to share, guinguette with daily specials, evening concerts and open stage. The cocktails are excellent, as is the atmosphere and the very friendly welcome. Reservations are essential, the place is very popular because of its originality! Large vegetarian selection.

Classic French mid-range restaurants with homemade cuisine (€€):

Les Prés Gaillardou 3km between Vitrac and La Roque Gageac in the hamlet of Gaillardou, on the right as you go towards Cénac. +33 5 53 59 67 89. Closed Sunday evening, Tuesday and Wednesday all day except July and August. Reservations are required in the evening, dinner service no later than 7.30pm.
French or Périgord cuisine revisited, with excellent meats, gourmet desserts, several organic wines on the menu.

L'Adresse, restaurant-bistro at the top of rue Fénelon, in the old town of Sarlat. +33 5 53 30 56 19. Closed on Sunday and Monday. A small room with a small terrace, modern cuisine and friendly service. Reservations are essential.

Le Bistrot de l'Octroi, 111, Avenue de Selves, Sarlat. +33 5 53 30 83 40. Modern brasserie open for lunch and dinner every day of the year, an irreplaceable service in our beautiful province! Close to the town centre, comfortable location with a veranda, efficient service. Tight prices for the daily lunch menu during the week. Frequented year round by locals.

Lou Toupi, modern, young outdoor restaurant under a tent, in a walnut grove on the road to La Roque Gageac, every day 12 noon to 11pm, April to September. Tel: +33 6 73 90 32 19. Modern cuisine, grilled meats, cocktails and local wines. Vegetarian options.

Farmhouse inns set on the farmland, in the countryside. These restaurants prepare traditional Périgord cuisine from farm-raised ducks or geese. They open seasonally only and are very popular, so advanced booking is required to avoid a long, pointless drive! A navigation system is required to get there via small country roads. No vegetarian choices in either location.

  • 💚💚 La Ferme de la Garrigue Haute, lieu-dit La Garrigue Haute, 24370 Prats-de-Carlux. Telephone: +33 5 53 29 80 08. Open June 15 through August, evenings only, closed on Sundays. Quintessential Périgord experience: a countryside setting with a large terrace, the warm welcome of the Boucherie family, geese chattering below near the pond, and a tasty, very generous cuisine. Our top choice in that selection for value for money, quiet setting and product quality.
  • L’Auberge des Marthres, Les Marthres, Salignac-Eyvigues. Tel +33 5 53 28 90 89. Opens April to September, daily except Monday. Family restaurant in an old house (1788) in a rural hamlet. Very hearty servings of farm-raised duck. Friendly family service.

Gastronomic getaways (€€€) :

💚💚 Ô Moulin next to the Romanesque church in Carsac. Tel: +33 5 53 30 13 55 - Closed Sunday evenings, Tuesdays and Wednesdays all day, except in high season. Michelin Bib Gourmand.
The bucolic setting of an old restored mill and chic country decor for this very nice establishment, which is starting its sixth season. The owners are a charming couple, so come along for the ride! Exquisite creative cuisine, sophisticated presentation, welcoming terrace for an exceptional moment.

💚 La Belle Etoile on the banks of the Dordogne in La Roque Gageac, at the entrance to the village coming from the Petit Manoir. Tel: +33 5 53 29 51 44. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Michelin Bib Gourmand.
An institution in local gastronomy. Elaborate, generous cuisine, attentive traditional service, nice presentation, beautiful wine list. A very popular restaurant with locals and tourists alike, booking is required before your stay if you want to have a chance. In season, it is often necessary to book a week or two in advance.

La Couleuvrine, 1 place de la Bouquerie in Sarlat. +33 5 53 59 27 80. Closed on Sunday and Monday.
A family address, owned for 3 generations by the Château de Lacypierre family in St Crépin and Carlucet. Marion, the young chef and Maître Restaurateur, offers creative cuisine with vegetarian options. Open all year round, this restaurant welcomes, among others, visiting stars during film shoots... A safe bet in the Sarlatan gastronomy.

Le Meysset, 62, route d'Argentouleau, on the heights of Sarlat. Tel +33 (0)5 53 59 08 29. Gastronomic restaurant in the woods on the outskirts of Sarlat offering an inventive cuisine with original flavours. Stylish welcome, beautiful terrace.

FURTHER AWAY

Good restaurants of all styles and prices located more than 20 minutes away from the Petit Manoir, for a lunch or a nice summer evening. Reservations are highly recommended so you don't go for nothing!

Watch out for deer and wild boar on the road on the way back at night... 😉

💚 La Terrasse de Moncalou €, lieu-dit Moncalou, Florimont-Gaumier. +33 6 07 57 01 50. Closed on Mondays or Tuesdays in high season. Days/times updated on the website.
Country location at the foot of the Moncalou tower for this simple and friendly restaurant run by a friendly Dutchman, Sander Bremmers. English and Dutch spoken. Specialities of burgers and matured beef. Gourmet desserts. Vegetarian options. Beware, the country road leading to this restaurant is really narrow and winding, and the return journey at night requires a lot of vigilance!

La Table de Monrecour €€€, in St Vincent de Cosse, a gourmet restaurant on the Domaine de Monrecour, a chateau overlooking the road along the Dordogne after Beynac. +33 5 53 28 33 59. A bistro formula at lunchtime, a gastronomic menu in the evening, this good table in a superb location knows how to please everyone, with style. Distinguished by the Michelin Guide.

L'Atelier d'Epicure €€, hotel-restaurant along the valley road, just before St Cyprien, in Argentonesse, 24220 Castels et Bezenac. Tel: 05 53 30 40 95. A gourmet restaurant with several offers : a short menu of the day at lunchtime except at weekends, a Perigord menu and a creative gastronomic menu with sophisticated presentations. Nice terrace. Reservations recommended.

💚 L'Auberge des Tilleuls € lieu-dit Langlade à Marnac, +33 7 87 40 63 91. In the peaceful setting of an old Périgord farmhouse in the middle of the fields, this restaurant offers traditional gourmet cuisine, with charming service. Nice terrace. Concert evenings in summer, see FB page.

Le Moulin du Porteil €, 627 Route Du Bugue, in Campagne, +33 5 53 54 48 73. Small restaurant open only from Thursday to Saturday evening, run by a Swiss couple who have come to discover their cuisine in the Périgord. For a change from duck, don't forget to visit the superb park of the Château de Campagne and its hundred-year-old trees before dinner.

Le Petit Léon €€€, in St Léon sur Vézère, outdoor restaurant open from April to October. +33 5 53 51 18 04. One * in the Michelin Guide, this gastronomic restaurant is unanimously acclaimed by our visitors who have tried it. And the village of St Léon is well worth a visit.

L'auberge de la Poste €€ in St Léon sur Vézère, +33 5 53 50 73 08. Beautiful terrace on the village street and large covered terrace at the back of the restaurant. Traditional Périgord cuisine revisited by the owner, Maître Restaurateur, and professional service for this good capacity restaurant, open even out of season in St Léon.

La Table de Jean €€, in the village of Coly, north-east of Montignac. +33 5 53 51 68 08. Bistro restaurant run by the Hamelin family, who own the nearby Manoir de Hautegente. Modern cuisine, country bistro atmosphere, you'll have a great time. For a special occasion, the gastronomic table at the Manoir de Hautegente, just outside Coly, was highly recommended.
